Insights Into The Mental & Work Patterns of Successful entrepreneurs by Myriam Borg
There is definitely something different about entrepreneurs, they are a breed of their own.
Whilst some people say entrepreneurs are born and not made – I disagree, I come from a
Mind set that says “if you model right” you can be anything you damn well want to be. I have made it my life’s mission to prove this exact point. You can do anything, be anything – if you are a mediocre loser, or a grunt, or a super success- that is by choice.
You choose ALWAYS, whether its by sheer will (my forte:) decisions you make or the decisions and choice you do NOT make. We are the creators of our own destiny. Its not as simplistic as stated I will give you that, but its not in-comprehensive either.
So what mental and work processes do successful entrepreneurs have? Generally speaking they tend to be type A personality – this diagram kind of explains the strive strive strive “just because” character of a Type A personality.
So make that your modus operatus if entrepreneurial-ship is your goal.
The other thing you will find entrepreneurial types have that other types don’t is that they are very creative and view the world and problem solving in a very very different way to the majority and nothing like the status quo- thoughts like mission impossible situations where everyone says “impossible move on!” the entrepreneurs think “ How do I do this, I am just not thinking outside of the box enough!” they tend to be rebels at heart. When someone says “you can’t do that” most people go “oh ok then” the entrepreneurs being natural rebels ask “ and why not?”- while most people think “who will allow me” the true entrepreneurs always think “who will stop me” to which the truth is no one really! We are our own limitation, our own jailers, its true.
Entrepreneurs work differently. While the grunts work consistently and rather unproductively at that- the entrepreneurs tend to go through periods of massive creativity & they work none stop not because they have to, but because they get obsessively driven with reaching their goals! And sometimes its weeks, months later – they go through a mini burn out…. Only to rise from the ashes to be obsessed with a new goal filled with drive.
Yes, I now what your are thinking – it sounds a bit unstable but we are talking about patterns that define entrepreneurs- and they are an ambitious never say die bunch, so working to exhaustion is a common trait- followed by period of burn out.
If you have been following me for the past 10 years you’d see it. I work like mad then the next thing you see is my blogs that sound like drivel because I am in a hammock at my place in Vavau reading light weight books, or shifting my focus off work by going all over Europe, or sailing some ocean… why it’s the only way I can recharge and refresh from the intensity that is the blessing AND the curse of every entrepreneur. Others do it differently, but all have highly active period followed by complete rest & diversion. It’s the nature of the beast, model it if you want in to the entrepreneurs club.
Entrepreneurs are resilient, adaptive and love change- the less enterprising tend to be the opposite – they tend to be inflexible, fixed in their ideas and they hate change of any kind.
But I think secretly entrepreneurs “love love love” Freedom,I know I do, and I recognize that quality in every entrepreneur I have met- there are plenty of conventional business people, but entrepreneurs they tend to dig their heels in when it comes to freedom- its not something they like to compromise on! I guess it’s a catch 22, they need to be entrepreneurial in order to have maximum freedom and having tasted freedom they are obsessively entrepreneurial because they want more of it.
